Austin Public Library’s Free Comic Book Day | May 9, 2011
It’s no secret that I LOVE reading. If you asked me to name a few of my favorite books the list would probably go on and on and on. (The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho will top that list). Therefore, it wouldn’t surprise anyone that I will help spread the word about reading and encouraging reading in any way possible. I’ve been looking for a way to help out the Austin Public Library when I heard about Free Comic Book Day. Graphic novels are a great place to start for beginners and we all know most children are visual learners, so what better way to kickstart their love for reading than looking at a few comics?
I was excited to meet Michelle, who I came into contact with about the event. And to my surprise, she even had a gift for me! She had brought a book she’d previously read called Beauty Queens by Libba Bray. It starts out very much like Lord of the Flies, but in modern time with beautiful girls competing for the title of Miss Teen Dream. They end up on an exhilarating adventure across the beautiful island they’ve landed on, take down those who are against them, and most importantly discover who they truly are and realize how important it is to stay true to yourself and not what other people want you to be.
The event was fun and I got to meet a lot of interesting people. While handing out Free Comics for everyone generously donated by Austin Books & Comics, I marveled at the classic comics available such as: Dark Wing Duck, Chip & Dale, Green Lantern, and many more! It has me reved up and wanting to see Thor the movie really badly!
Free Comic Book Day is the first Saturday of May every year. So be sure not to miss out on this great chance at classics and a fun twist on reading in 2012!
