American Scout Day | November 13, 2010

I have driven by the Heritage Farmstead Museum in Plano multiple times, but I’ve never actually had the opportunity to visit. When I was invited to make an appearance on their American Scout Day, I jumped on the bandwagon!

American Scout Day is an event where the Boys & Girl Scout Troops in the DFW Metroplex are invited to come and experience pioneer life on the Black land Prairie. They learn how to make rain sticks, quilling crafts, plow and plant as their ancestors did, and learn about Texas and what it takes to be an American Citizen. On top of all that, this satisfies the requirements for many Try-its, Badges, and IPs for their troop!

My job for the day was manning the Estimation Jar, which is a glass jar filled with various sized rocks and pebbles. The children had to estimate how many pebbles were in the jar, write it down on a piece of paper, and put it in the bin. If they guessed correctly, they would win a prize for their troop. While the children were filling out their estimation papers, I got the opportunity to talk to them about what they were learning and how they were enjoying their experience at the Heritage Farmstead Museum. I also signed tons of autograph cards for the Scouts to take home as a keepsake.

Ms. Angie Carroll, who is the Manager of Marketing & Public Relations at Heritage Farmstead was dressed up and roaming the grounds and saw me signing autographs and asked for one. I immediately signed her one and she thought of her Father, a Vietnam War Veteran. Naturally, I was ecstatic to sign her Father one because I wanted to show my appreciation for the sacrifice he made. Ms. Carroll was so elated that I happily signed both cards one for her, and one for her Father. She also noticed that I had a special place in my heart for Veterans so she invited me to attend their Military event in May 2011 so stay tuned for that blog entry!

I want to thank Heritage Farmstead Museum for welcoming me so graciously while I volunteered my time. I enjoyed hanging out with the children and helping them guess how many pebbles were in the jar. (There were 208 total!) And the high school volunteers who also came by to help make the event such a success were great to work with.
