JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes | October 30, 2011
On a crisp Sunday morning, I sported my Under Armour gear and said, “Boo” to Juvenile Diabetes with my two best friends and fellow Longhorn pageant girl, Lora Chowdury.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is the largest charitable funder of and advocate for Type 1 Diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes can occur at any age, but most people are diagnosed from infancy into their early 30s. With Type 1 Diabetes, a person’s pancreas produces little or no insulin, therefore one must inject insulin several times a time or continually infuse insulin through a pump.
The walk took place at the picturesque Mueller Lake Park with it’s tranquil lake, camel colored stones, and green grassy fields. The event was filled with plenty of activities to keep the kids happy and full of life, something you wouldn’t normally expect from a child suffering from Type 1 Diabetes. There were games, pumpkin carving and decorating, train rides, bounce houses, and even mini horses among many different festivities. The JDRF’s Walk to Cure Diabetes is one of the many ways the research foundation continues to work hard to find a cure for diabetes, which with recent dramatic progress in research, a cure is in sight.
I was proud and honored to be a part of such a wonderful event. The 2 mile walk with Lora, Miss Teen Texas International 2011 was refreshing and humbling. As we walked, signs spread out along the trail had a different child’s photo and their story. It was wonderful to see the children stop by their signs and smile for a picture.
